Rheinmetall unveils GMF 140 guided missile frigate

Rheinmetall has unveiled the GMF 140, a next-generation guided missile frigate designed to meet the challenges of modern maritime warfare. The vessel, which measures 140 meters in length and has a displacement of over 6,000 tons, is intended to serve as a multi-purpose platform capable of air defense, anti-ballistic missile protection, anti-submarine warfare, and long-range land attacks.

The frigate is designed for blue-water operations but is also suitable for coastal, expeditionary, and coalition missions. It features a low-observability hull design and an integrated digital architecture intended to allow operation with minimal crew. The ship is expected to integrate significant American technology, including the Aegis combat system or Lockheed Martin’s CMS330, alongside US-made radar systems capable of tracking hypersonic weapons and ballistic missiles.

Armament options for the GMF 140 include 64 vertical launch cells for various missiles, a 127mm main gun, torpedo launchers, and potential laser weapon systems. Rheinmetall plans to market the vessel first to North American clients before expanding its reach to other NATO allies and international markets, particularly in the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic regions.
