Rhenen named cleanest municipality in the Netherlands

The municipality of Rhenen has been named the cleanest municipality in the Netherlands for 2025. The distinction was awarded by Verpact in recognition of the local government's successful initiatives to improve waste separation among residents.

By utilizing a combination of personal contact, waste coaches, improved collection locations, and enforcement, Rhenen significantly reduced contamination in collected PMD (Plastic, Metal, and Drink cartons) waste. The pollution rate in these streams dropped from 51.4% to 23.4%, enhancing the quality of materials available for recycling. Verpact CEO Hester Klein Lankhorst presented the award to Alderman Bert Fintelman.
