Rheumatic diseases impact organs beyond joints, experts warn

In observance of World Rheumatic Patient Day on October 12, medical experts are highlighting the systemic impact of rheumatic diseases. While often associated with joint pain and inflammation, more than 200 types of rheumatic diseases can affect various organs and tissues, including the lungs, heart, and kidneys.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1.71 billion people globally live with musculoskeletal disorders, which represent the leading cause of disability worldwide. Dr. Alberto Hegewisch of Boehringer Ingelheim emphasizes the necessity of multidisciplinary, person-centered care and early symptom recognition to manage complications.

In the field of immunology, upcoming professional events include the 2026 Genomic Diagnosis of Rare Immunological Diseases course, scheduled to run virtually from October 21 to November 27, 2026.
