Rheumatism Association calls for Swedish healthcare reforms
In observance of International Rheumatism Day on October 12, the Rheumatism Association is calling for urgent healthcare reforms in Sweden to support those living with chronic illnesses. Approximately one million Swedes are affected by rheumatic diseases, and nearly half of the population lives with at least one chronic condition.
Chronic illness patients account for 80–85 percent of healthcare costs and contribute to economic losses through sick leave and lost tax revenue. To address this, the Association, led by Pia Lennberg, urges regional authorities to implement a comprehensive care plan with clear goals and accountability.
Key recommendations include ensuring access to specialized rehabilitation, providing consistent medical contacts and individualized treatment plans, and increasing long-term training positions for specialists such as doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists.
