Rheumatoid arthritis prevention and early diagnosis in Germany

Approximately 1.8 million people in Germany suffer from inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) specifically affects between 0.8 and 1.2 percent of the adult population.

Scientific studies indicate that RA can manifest symptoms months or even years before a full diagnosis. Common early signs include painful joints, morning stiffness, and extreme fatigue, which affects 40 to 80 percent of patients with early-stage RA. Professor Dr. med. Jürgen Rech of the University Hospital Erlangen noted during a press conference for the German Rheumatology Congress 2026 that there is often a significant delay between the onset of symptoms and a formal diagnosis, resulting in lost time for intervention.

Research suggests that lifestyle factors can influence the risk of developing the disease and may help delay its onset in high-risk individuals. The German Rheuma-VOR study highlights the importance of structured early diagnostics in managing the condition.
