Rheumatoid arthritis research focuses on early diagnosis and microbiota

At the 14th Rheumatoid Arthritis Symposium organized by the Spanish Society of Rheumatology (SER), medical professionals discussed advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of the systemic disease. In Spain, rheumatoid arthritis affects approximately 400,000 people, representing about 1% of the adult population. Dr. Susana Romero, president of SER, emphasized that while much is known about the pathology, continuous research is vital because early diagnosis and multidisciplinary follow-up are essential to prevent long-term damage and achieve remission.

Research is also exploring the link between intestinal microbiota and inflammation. Dr. Begoña González Suárez from Hospital Clínic de Barcelona noted that patients often exhibit an imbalance in gut bacteria, which may affect immune responses. While fecal microbiota transplantation is being investigated as a potential therapeutic avenue, it remains in the research phase. Current studies in animal models have shown mixed results, including instances where mice developed symptoms after receiving microbiota from rheumatoid arthritis patients, meaning a definitive treatment has not yet been established.
