Rheumatologists urge early diagnosis to ensure disease remission
Rheumatologists are emphasizing the critical importance of timely diagnosis and treatment to achieve disease remission. Experts from the Polish Rheumatology Society highlight that while modern therapies—including biological drugs and Janus kinase inhibitors—offer a ‘golden era’ of treatment, delays in intervention can lead to irreversible damage to joints and internal organs such as the heart, kidneys, and lungs.
To improve patient outcomes, specialists propose a ‘6-12-6’ strategy. This framework identifies three vital milestones: seeking a rheumatological consultation within 6 weeks of symptom onset, utilizing the 12-week ‘window of opportunity’ for effective intervention, and aiming to achieve remission within 6 months. Experts note that rheumatic diseases can affect not only adults but also children and adolescents, and symptoms may involve the vascular system, muscles, or bones rather than just joint pain.
