Rhian Thomas knits blankets for infants in Africa

Rhian Thomas, a volunteer and Eisteddfod steward from the Dolgellau area, has been knitting blankets to support infants and young children in impoverished parts of Africa. The blankets are being donated to charities that distribute them to needy regions, including Uganda.

Thomas refers to the items as ‘Fish and Chips’ blankets, a name inspired by the Welsh tradition of wrapping fish and chips in newspaper to keep them warm. She noted that in some parts of Africa, infants are sometimes discharged from hospitals wrapped only in newspaper due to a lack of resources. Thomas utilizes leftover wool to create the blankets and has personally traveled to Uganda to assist with volunteer work.
