Rhine and Moselle rivers pose dangers due to low water levels

Low water levels on the Rhine and Moselle rivers have exposed riverbeds, creating significant safety risks for the public. The water police have issued warnings regarding two primary dangers: unexploded ordnance and dangerous currents.

Receding shorelines have revealed old ammunition and explosive remnants. Authorities warn that these items remain highly sensitive to vibrations and can detonate upon the slightest contact. Citizens are instructed not to touch or move any found objects and to contact the police immediately.

Additionally, swimming in these rivers remains life-threatening despite the low water levels. The narrowed riverbeds can cause increased current strength and whirlpools. There is also a risk that passing ships could pull individuals from shallow areas into the current or directly under the vessel.
