Rhine and Ruhr rivers host large-scale volunteer cleanup
Tens of thousands of volunteers are participating in a large-scale cleanup operation along the Rhine, Ruhr, Lippe, and Niers rivers in Germany. The Rhine Clean Up initiative, which has been held annually in September since 2018, aims to collect and dispose of tons of waste from riverbanks.
Organizers expect significant participation in major North Rhine-Westphalia cities such as Düsseldorf and Cologne, with many registrations reported in Bonn and the Lower Rhine region. Last year, the initiative successfully collected 300 tons of waste. The debris typically includes party litter like plastic bottles and grilling equipment, though participants have also found items such as clothing and exhaust systems.
Due to low water levels, organizers have issued a specific warning to volunteers regarding the potential danger of unexploded wartime munitions that may have been exposed by the receding waters. Environmental Minister Oliver Krischer is expected to participate in the kickoff event in Düsseldorf.
