Rhine low water levels disrupt shipping and economic growth

Low water levels on the Rhine are significantly impacting shipping and economic stability in Germany and Switzerland. Cargo vessels are currently restricted to carrying only 15% to 30% of their usual capacity, leading to increased costs and delays. This disruption is particularly critical for Switzerland, as the ports in Basel, Birsfelden, and Muttenz handle approximately 10% of all Swiss imports, 25% of container traffic, and 30% of mineral oil products.

In Germany, the Deutsche Bundesbank reports that while the economy is expected to grow more strongly in the fourth quarter, the third quarter faces a slowdown. The drought and low water levels are hindering industrial production and reducing the contribution of exports to GDP. These logistical challenges are compounded by high energy prices and weakened private consumption.

To address these vulnerabilities, Swiss National Councilor Patricia von Falkenstein plans to propose measures to urge German authorities to implement long-term solutions, such as deepening shipping channels in critical bottlenecks like the passage from Kaub to Cologne, rather than relying on temporary fixes.
