Rhine river low water levels disrupt shipping and trigger truck ban suspensions
Extreme low water levels on the Rhine are disrupting European inland shipping and threatening supply chains. At the critical Kaub gauge, water levels reached 16 cm on August 10, 2026, with forecasts suggesting levels could drop into single digits, potentially splitting the river into two non-navigable sections.
To mitigate the impact on logistics, several German states—including North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern—have moved to suspend Sunday and holiday truck driving bans. However, logistics experts and the BGL warn that these measures do not create additional driver capacity, as Germany faces a shortage of over 100,000 drivers, nor do they fully compensate for the lost capacity of large cargo ships.
In Kaub, the ferry service has already suspended operations. The German Association of Inland Waterway Transport (BDB) warned that if water levels continue to fall, commercial shipping and cruise operations may become unviable. In response, Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger has indicated that the government will expand programs to help ships adapt to low-water conditions and will coordinate with state ministers to manage the transport of critical goods.
