This prevents many vessels from carrying full loads, impacting freight transport and causing the cancellation of numerous tourist excursions and line services between cities like Mainz, Koblenz, and Rüdesheim.

In response to these recurring hydrological challenges, Rhine-bordering states and shipping associations are calling for increased federal investment. A position paper highlights a significant gap between the estimated 2.5 billion euro annual requirement for waterway maintenance and the actual funds provided. Stakeholders emphasize that climate change is making extreme low-water periods more frequent, necessitating modernized fleets and improved infrastructure to protect the economic and industrial stability of the region.
