Extreme low water levels on the Rhine River are causing significant disruptions to European inland shipping and industrial supply chains. At the critical Kaub chokepoint, water levels fell to zero centimeters late on Monday before a slight rise to five centimeters on Tuesday. In Cologne, the river reached a new historical low of 40 centimeters on Monday.

The drought has led to severe operational challenges. The luxury hotel ship MS Dutch Melody ran aground near the Deutzer Bridge in Cologne. Freight vessels are forced to carry significantly reduced loads to avoid running aground, which has increased shipping costs; for example, diesel transport from Rotterdam to Karlsruhe saw a 15% price hike on Monday.

Economic impacts are mounting. Ferry operator W. Jansen & Söhne has applied for short-time work for the first time in its history due to the inability to operate. In response to the deteriorating conditions, Hapag-Lloyd announced revised low water surcharges for barge transport on the Rhine, effective November 1, 2026. Experts warn that a sustainable easing of the situation is not currently in sight.
