Rhine river pollution levels found to be 40 times higher than estimated

The Rhine river faces significant pollution challenges as the annual ‘RhineCleanUp’ event approaches. Organizers expect approximately 50,000 volunteers to participate in cleaning riverbanks across Germany, including regions in Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse.

Recent research from the Universities of Bonn and Tübingen indicates that the level of waste in the Rhine is 40 times higher than previously estimated. The study suggests that roughly 53,000 large pieces of debris flow toward the North Sea daily, totaling up to 40 million pieces annually.

In support of local environmental efforts, employees from several Novotel hotels, including locations in Aachen, Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Frankfurt, participated in a clean-up action along the Cologne riverbanks. This initiative, part of the ‘Ocean’s Days’ program, was supported by the Cologne environmental association K. R. A. K. E. e. V., which operates a floating trash trap near the Cologne Zoo Bridge to intercept waste before it flows downstream.
