Rhine river low water levels disrupt European shipping and supply chains
Extreme low water levels on the Rhine and other European rivers are disrupting shipping and threatening industrial supply chains. In Germany, the Rhine's water levels have reached historic lows, with the gauge at Düsseldorf expected to hit minus four centimeters. This has severely limited the capacity of inland vessels, which are operating at significantly reduced loads to avoid grounding.
The shortage is causing a surge in logistics costs and potential material shortages in the construction sector, particularly for sand, gravel, and bitumen. To mitigate these disruptions, transport companies are shifting cargo to rail. DB Cargo has mobilized approximately 400 additional freight wagons, and RheinCargo has introduced extra train services between Rotterdam and Duisburg to transport coal and iron ore.
In the Netherlands, despite recent rainfall, the precipitation deficit remains among the driest 5 percent of years on record. While rain may provide local relief for agriculture, experts warn that groundwater and major rivers like the Rhine and Meuse will recover slowly. In the Delfland region, authorities have temporarily eased water extraction bans for greenhouse horticulture, though freshwater remains scarce.
