Italy and Germany face crises from earthquake and low river levels

In Italy, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake near a supervolcano has caused significant disruption in the Campania region. The quake, which occurred on July 31, injured 21 people and left approximately 3,300 residents evacuated. The port of Pozzuoli has been restricted for heavy vehicles due to the risk of building collapses, forcing ferry services to Ischia and Procida to be rerouted through Naples. This shift has resulted in altered schedules and increased costs for island residents.

Regional President Roberto Fico is working to facilitate the return of evacuees by easing home renovation processes, though political debates regarding a regional state of emergency continue.

Separately, in Germany, record-low water levels on the Rhine and Elbe rivers are severely impacting inland shipping and the broader economy. While recent rainfall has provided slight relief, water levels at critical points like Kaub and Duisburg remain significantly below historical lows. The Bundesbank has warned that these conditions could dampen Germany's economic recovery by increasing transport costs and hindering industrial production, specifically affecting companies like BASF.
