Rhine swimming bans show deterrent effect in German cities
Municipalities along the Rhine in Germany report that swimming bans implemented during the summer are having a deterrent effect. Local authorities in cities including Cologne, Düsseldorf, Neuss, Leverkusen, Krefeld, and Duisburg have utilized a combination of patrols, fines, and public awareness campaigns to discourage people from entering the river.
In Cologne, the regulatory office identified 106 violations this year, issuing 69 fines of up to 250 euros. In Düsseldorf, which was the first municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia to introduce the ban, officials conducted approximately 4,100 preventive discussions and 125 regulatory proceedings. The highest fine issued in Düsseldorf reached 800 euros. Data indicates that most violators are men between the ages of 20 and 25.
