Rhineland-Palatinate student cafeteria prices rise significantly

Average meal prices at student cafeterias (Mensas) in Rhineland-Palatinate have risen significantly over the last four years, according to data from the state's Science Ministry. In some locations, prices have increased by as much as 50 percent.

In Mainz, the average cost for vegan, vegetarian, and meat or fish dishes rose by at least 30 cents compared to 2021 levels. Other regions saw even sharper increases; for instance, in Kaiserslautern, prices for vegan or vegetarian meals rose by approximately 1.40 euros, while meat-based meals rose by 1.45 euros compared to four years ago. In Trier, average lunch prices climbed from 2.64 euros in 2021 to 3.94 euros in 2025.

The Green parliamentary group has called on the state government to take action by increasing subsidies for student cafeterias to alleviate the financial burden on students.
