Rhineland-Palatinate universities increase semester fees
Students in Rhineland-Palatinate are facing significant increases in semester fees for the 2026/27 winter semester. The primary driver for these rising costs is the increased price of the Deutschland-Semesterticket.
At Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, fees have risen by approximately 20 percent, increasing from 305.55 euros to 366.90 euros. The University of Koblenz has seen an increase of over 100 euros within two years, rising from 238.10 euros to 350.30 euros. Meanwhile, the Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität (RPTU) in Kaiserslautern has seen fees rise to 381.80 euros from 300.40 euros.
Student representatives, including Paul Busch from the AStA at RPTU Kaiserslautern, have expressed dissatisfaction with the rising financial burden. While a vast majority of students supported the introduction of the solidarity model for the Deutschland-Semesterticket in 2024, the cost per semester has since risen from 176.40 euros to 226.80 euros.
