Rhino conservation efforts see success in South Africa and Namibia

Conservation initiatives in South Africa and Namibia are seeing significant results through specialized wildlife tourism. In South Africa’s Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, rhino poaching decreased by 52% in 2026. Revenue from luxury tourism, such as stays at Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge, helps fund anti-poaching operations, surveillance technology, and canine teams. These efforts also support the critically endangered black rhino through partnerships like the World Wide Fund for Nature’s Black Rhino Range Expansion Project.

In Namibia, desert rhino safaris in the Damaraland and Kunene regions offer unique tracking experiences to support black rhino conservation. These excursions focus on specialist guides who interpret wildlife signs in rugged landscapes, moving beyond traditional vehicle-based game viewing. The Namibian Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism has identified the recovery of black rhinoceroses in Kunene communal areas as a major conservation achievement.
