Rhône authorities authorize defense shooting following wolf pack confirmation

Authorities in the Rhône department have confirmed the presence of a wolf pack in the Pilat Massif and western Rhône region following a significant increase in attacks on domestic livestock this summer. Photographic evidence and field observations have confirmed not only the presence of wolves but also the existence of pups, indicating that the species is now reproducing and establishing a permanent pack in the area.

In response, Rhône Prefect Etienne Guyot has implemented new measures to protect livestock. Following an information meeting for agricultural producers in Claveisolles, the state has authorized defense shootings by lieutenants of the louveterie in the affected regions. While the wolf remains a protected species and intentional destruction is prohibited, lethal shots are permitted as a derogation in cases of attacks on domestic herds.

The prefecture is also working with the Chamber of Agriculture to inform mayors and farmers located within a 15 km radius of any suspected predation events.
