Rhode Island Energy implements grid automation and efficiency upgrades

Rhode Island Energy has reported successful outcomes from its grid modernization and energy efficiency initiatives. In August 2026, the utility’s automated smart switches prevented power outages for nearly 5,000 customers during three separate grid fault events. The technology detected problems and rerouted electricity in an average of one minute, allowing the grid to self-correct without the need for manual crew dispatch.

Additionally, the company partnered with Central Falls High School to implement energy efficiency measures in its new facility. Through the Commercial Energy Efficiency Program, Rhode Island Energy provided nearly $423,000 in incentives for upgrades including high-efficiency lighting, advanced HVAC controls, and enhanced building envelope systems. These improvements are projected to save approximately 90,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity and 6,600 therms of natural gas annually, reducing the school’s yearly energy costs by more than $31,000.
