Rhode Island reports second Powassan virus case of 2026
The Rhode Island Department of Health has confirmed a new case of the Powassan virus in a man in his 70s from Newport County. The individual began experiencing symptoms in late July, marking the second confirmed case of the virus in the state for 2026 and the tenth case reported in Rhode Island since 2016.
Powassan is a rare but serious tick-borne illness transmitted primarily by black-legged ticks. Early symptoms often include fever, headache, vomiting, and general weakness. If left untreated, the disease can progress to meningoencephalitis, which may cause seizures, muscle weakness, paralysis, or altered mental status.
Health officials emphasize that there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for the virus, making prevention through tick avoidance essential. Recommended precautions include using EPA-approved repellents, wearing long sleeves, performing thorough body checks after being outdoors, and ensuring pets are also checked for ticks.
