Rhode Island sues Meta over fraudulent scam advertisements

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha has filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms, alleging the company fails to block fraudulent advertisements and financial scams on its platforms. The lawsuit claims Meta is aware that scam ads cause significant financial harm to vulnerable consumers, including senior citizens, but allows them to run because they generate substantial revenue. The complaint further alleges that Meta uses accountholder data to help advertisers target these vulnerable groups.

The legal action seeks restitution, civil penalties, the disgorgement of ill-gotten gains, and the appointment of a monitor to ensure compliance. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone has called the lawsuit ‘unfounded,’ stating the company regularly partners with law enforcement to combat scammers and will fight the legal challenge.

The case has sparked broader debate regarding the liability of technology platforms. David Schwartz, former CTO of Ripple, has weighed in on the issue, arguing against wholesale algorithmic filtering of content. Schwartz suggested that excessive filtering intended to secure digital spaces could potentially harm free speech and hinder the ability of experts to detect and alert the public to new threats.
