Rhodes video shows farmer dragging two donkeys, sparking animal‑welfare investigation

A video recorded in the village of Psynthos on the island of Rhodes shows two donkeys tied to the rear of an agricultural vehicle while the vehicle moves on a public road. The footage, posted by a local resident, quickly spread on social media and provoked strong public outrage.

Authorities have identified the driver as a 56‑year‑old man. The Animal Rescue Rodos organization filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and police have opened a pre‑investigation to determine whether animal‑protection laws were violated. Because the statutory period for immediate prosecution has elapsed, the driver has not been taken into custody. The investigation will also assess any injuries or distress suffered by the animals.

The incident highlights concerns about animal welfare in rural Greece and has prompted calls for stricter enforcement of existing protection legislation.
