Rhodes bids for 2028 Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue
The Greek island of Rhodes is preparing a formal application to become the 2028 Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue. The municipality approved the bid after a proposal from the local tourism department, and the dossier will be submitted by the August 31 deadline under the invitation of the Union for the Mediterranean and the Anna Lindh Foundation.
The bid highlights Rhodes’ long history, multicultural identity and strategic position between Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Organisers aim to strengthen cultural tourism, involve local residents, especially youth and women, and create lasting networks with other Mediterranean cities. If selected, the city would join a rotating program that each year names one northern European and one southern Mediterranean city to host a series of cultural events and dialogue initiatives throughout 2028.
