Rhodes experiences gastroenteritis outbreak during tourism season

Rhodes, a major Greek tourism hub, has experienced a significant increase in gastroenteritis cases since July. During the peak in August, Rhodes Hospital reported approximately 40 cases per day, a figure that decreased to about 30 daily cases in September, representing a 20 percent decline.

Infectious disease specialist Stelios Karatapanis noted that these cases accounted for roughly one-third of all emergency room visits during the tourism season. Laboratory investigations have ruled out water or sewage infrastructure as the source of the outbreak. Instead, experts have identified a highly contagious virus that spreads through contaminated surfaces, food, and close personal contact.

While most patients experience mild symptoms and recover within two to three days, hospitalizations have been necessary for high-risk groups, including the elderly and individuals with chronic health conditions.
