Rhodes firefighter Petros Diakakis honored at funeral after fatal rescue accident

A funeral was held in the village of Emponas on Rhodes for 52-year-old firefighter Petros Diakakis, who died during a rescue operation. The service was attended by family, friends, senior Fire Service officers, and local authorities.

Mr. Diakakis passed away following a fall from a significant height in the Sidiritissa Gorge on Tuesday, September 22. He was attempting to assist two Italian climbers when the accident occurred. The incident was initially detected by a patrolling drone, leading to an immediate mobilization to reach the firefighter in the difficult terrain.

In response to the tragedy, the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Evangelos Tournas, has ordered a sworn administrative investigation (EDE) to fully examine the circumstances and causes of the fatal accident.
