Rhodes to host international Hipparchus astronomy experiment

The Municipality of Rhodes is launching an international educational and scientific program titled ‘The Hipparchus Experiment,’ scheduled to run from October 2026 to July 2027. The initiative aims to connect students and educators in Rhodes with international school communities through collaborative scientific research.

The program focuses on measuring the distance between the Earth and the Moon using the parallax method, a technique historically utilized by the ancient astronomer Hipparchus. By bridging ancient Greek astronomy with modern scientific methodology, the project seeks to provide students with hands-on experience in astronomical observations and data collection.

Led by Deputy Mayor of Education and Lifelong Learning Stamatia Gianneli, in cooperation with the International Center of Writers and Translators of Rhodes, the initiative emphasizes experiential learning. The program includes scientific guidance, training sessions for educators, and opportunities for students to exchange findings with peers abroad.
