Rhodes University protests over fee protocols lead to arrests

Protests at Rhodes University regarding a new student fee payment protocol led to police using stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse approximately 100 demonstrators during a graduation ceremony in Makhanda. Thirteen students were arrested following the incident, which occurred despite a high court interdict against continued protests.

The dispute centers on a 2027 protocol requiring self-funded undergraduates with outstanding debt to pay at least half of what they owe before registering, alongside a commitment to monthly payments of at least R3,000. Additionally, students owing more than R25,000 may be denied residence. The university management maintains these measures are necessary for financial sustainability, noting that unpaid fees reached approximately R321 million by 2024.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) described the recent gathering as a ‘silent protest’ organized by an unidentified group and has urged students to avoid violence and contact the council if arrested or injured.
