Rhys McClenaghan and Eamon Montgomery finish seventh in European finals

Irish gymnasts Rhys McClenaghan and Eamon Montgomery competed in the men’s finals at the European Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.

Olympic pommel horse champion Rhys McClenaghan finished seventh in the pommel horse final with a score of 14.166. McClenaghan, who is working toward higher difficulty and execution following a recent return from injury and surgery, had qualified for the final in fifth place with a score of 14.400. Italy’s Gabriele Targhetta secured the gold medal with a score of 15.133, while Armenia’s Hamlet Manukyan and Mamikon Khachatryan took silver and bronze.

Eamon Montgomery reached his first European final in the floor exercise, finishing seventh with a score of 13.533 after qualifying in sixth place with a score of 14.033. Gymnastics Ireland Performance & Technical Director Sally Johnson noted the high standard of competition as the athletes prepare for the upcoming World Championships in Rotterdam.
