Greece economic outlook upgraded to positive by R&I
The Japanese rating agency R&I has upgraded the outlook for the Greek economy from stable to positive (BBB positive). The decision is based on the country's steady economic growth, high primary surpluses, and continuous reduction of public debt.
Greece's real GDP grew by 2.1% in 2025, outperforming the Eurozone average. This growth was driven by increased private consumption, tourism, and investments supported by the Recovery and Resilience Facility and Foreign Direct Investment. While growth is expected to moderate to approximately 2% in 2026 due to inflation and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the long-term outlook remains stable.
Furthermore, the banking sector has shown significant improvement through the reduction of non-performing loans and increased liquidity. R&I noted that further credit rating upgrades could occur if fiscal stability and economic revitalization efforts continue following the scheduled elections in July 2027.
