Riace political conflict intensifies over Palestinian twinning proposal

Political tensions have escalated in Riace following a contentious municipal council meeting regarding a proposal to establish a twinning relationship with the Dheisheh Palestinian refugee camp in the West Bank.

The proposal was rejected by the council following a unanimous vote from the opposition. Minority council members, representing groups such as ‘Riace Protagonista’, ‘Riace Verso il futuro’, and ‘Riace guarda il sole’, criticized the administration for a lack of transparency and failure to consult citizens or opposition members before the proposal. The opposition also reported verbal aggression and intimidating behavior from non-resident individuals during the session.

Councilor Antonio Trifoli has challenged the legality of the administration's next steps, arguing that the municipal executive (Giunta) does not have the authority to approve such a twinning agreement, as that power resides with the municipal council under local government laws. Mayor Domenico Lucano has dismissed the opposition's complaints as ‘pretextual’ arguments.
