Riau faces respiratory infection surge amid forest fires and health insurance push

Health concerns are rising in Riau, Indonesia, as respiratory infections surge due to environmental factors and local authorities work to bolster healthcare coverage. The Riau Provincial Health Office reported 10,783 cases of Acute Respiratory Infection (ISPA) between August and early September 2026. This spike is attributed to haze caused by forest and land fires (Karhutla). Vulnerable groups are heavily affected, including nearly 2,000 toddlers and over 1,800 children aged 5–9. In response, the provincial government has deployed emergency medical teams, distributed free masks, and established emergency posts equipped with oxygen concentrators.

Simultaneously, the Pekanbaru City Government is focusing on long-term health security by encouraging residents to actively participate in the National Health Insurance (JKN) program, specifically the independent participant segment. Officials are coordinating with BPJS Kesehatan to improve payment mechanisms and exploring corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs to help fund healthcare for the community. The goal is to ensure a more proportional distribution of health financing across different membership segments.
