Riau faces unhealthy air quality due to forest fire haze

Forest and land fires in Sumatra have caused significant haze in the Riau region, leading to unhealthy air quality levels. The Standard Air Pollution Index (ISPU) in Pelalawan and Pekanbaru has reached the red zone, indicating unhealthy conditions. This deterioration is driven by fire hotspots in Riau, South Sumatra, and Jambi, with winds carrying smoke from the south toward Riau.

Medical experts, including pulmonologist dr. Indra Yovi from the Indonesian Lung Physicians Association (PDPI) Riau, have issued health warnings. Residents are advised to wear medical masks when outdoors to minimize the inhalation of dust and smoke particles, which can cause shortness of breath, coughing, and throat irritation.

Health officials recommend increasing water consumption to prevent dehydration and maintain throat moisture. Vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and individuals with chronic respiratory or lung diseases, are strongly advised to avoid outdoor activities to mitigate health risks.
