Riau institutions respond to hazardous haze from forest fires

In response to unhealthy air quality caused by forest and land fires in Riau, local institutions in Pekanbaru are implementing emergency measures.

Universitas Abdurrab has inaugurated an emergency clinic to assist community members suffering from respiratory issues due to haze. The facility, part of the ‘Riau Merdeka Asap’ movement, provides free oxygen, nebulizers, and medical equipment. The clinic is staffed by health professionals and operates Monday through Friday from 09:00 to 16:00 WIB.

Simultaneously, Universitas Riau (Unri) has transitioned to online learning for students and adjusted staff attendance requirements. Following a circular from the Rector, academic activities were moved to a remote format from August 26 to August 28, 2026, to protect the health and safety of the university community from the deteriorating air quality.
