Riau Police dismantle illegal mangrove charcoal smuggling operation
The Riau Regional Police (Polda Riau) have dismantled an illegal mangrove charcoal production and smuggling operation on Pulau Rupat, Bengkalis Regency. Authorities seized approximately 140 tons of charcoal produced from illegally burned mangrove forests.
The investigation, led by the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate, revealed that the charcoal was being prepared for shipment to Batu Pahat, Malaysia. The operation began following community reports of suspicious charcoal burning and transport activities. On September 14, 2026, police intercepted a vessel carrying 10 tons of charcoal, which led them to a production site in Teluk Rhu Village containing multiple large and small furnaces and storage warehouses.
Two suspects have been identified: AT, the ship's captain, and AK, the owner and manager of the production facility. Both individuals face charges under Law Number 18 of 2013 concerning the Prevention and Eradication of Forest Destruction.
