Indonesia reports USD 3.55 billion trade surplus in August 2026

Indonesia recorded a trade surplus of USD 3.55 billion in August 2026, a significant increase from the USD 0.12 billion surplus in July 2026. This growth was driven by a USD 6.09 billion surplus in the non-oil and gas sector and a narrowing deficit in the oil and gas sector. Total exports for August reached USD 26.61 billion, up 6.72 percent year-on-year, with China, the United States, and India remaining the primary export destinations.

Cumulatively, from January to August 2026, Indonesia maintained a trade surplus of USD 7.25 billion. While the August surplus provides a short-term buffer for foreign exchange reserves, economists note that the improvement may be fragile rather than structural, as it was partly supported by a monthly correction in imports.

In the domestic capital market, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) reported that fundraising reached Rp 169.5 trillion through September 2026 via 148 public offerings. Additionally, the number of single investor identification (SID) holders grew by 57.96 percent over the past year, reaching 32.17 million.

Looking ahead to 2026, projections suggest the current account deficit may widen to 2.49 percent of GDP, driven by strong domestic demand for imports and global economic uncertainties.
