Ribeira Grande municipal pools reopen after water quality checks

The municipal swimming complex in Ribeira Grande on São Miguel island has reopened its three pools to the public after water‑quality analyses confirmed that treatment of the water, pumping and filtration systems restored safe conditions. The closure, which began after contamination linked to user behaviour, ended following the municipality’s assurance of high hygiene standards.

The council also explained that the recent change in water colour at the nearby sea‑water Piscinas da Boca da Ribeira was caused by heavy rain on 29 July, which increased the flow of the Ribeira do Guilherme, carrying sediment and organic material into the coastal area. Regular maintenance, including emptying and cleaning, continues and officials will keep monitoring the pools to ensure safe use.
