Argentina Peronist Split Over Unity Amid Kicillof's Milei Extortion Claim
Governor Axel Kicillof of Buenos Aires accused President Javier Milei of using financial pressure on the 24 provinces as a form of political extortion to secure votes needed to suspend the PASO primaries and ensure his re‑election. In a column he warned of a cumulative loss of more than 47 trillion pesos for the provinces, cited the destruction of over 300 000 jobs and the closure of 26 000 firms, and said Milei’s method “is extortion – returning or lending part of the funds we took, but only if they vote for the laws we need.”
At the same time, Governor Ricardo Quintela of La Rioja hosted a gathering to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bishop Enrique Angelelli’s martyrdom. The event brought together Kirchnerist leader Máximo Kirchner, senators Eduardo “Wado” de Pedro and Juliana Di Tullio, and other peronist figures, with Quintela declaring, “When the peronism unites, it is invincible.” Notably, Kicillof did not attend, sending adviser Cristina Álvarez Rodríguez, and Sergio Massa also stayed away, underscoring persistent divisions within the Justicialist Party as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
