Ricardo Salinas Pliego backs American Society dinner with Mexican opposition leaders
The American Society, a U.S. business group led by Republican Larry Rubin, organised a gala dinner in Mexico that was co‑sponsored by billionaire entrepreneur Ricardo Salinas Pliego. The event gathered prominent opposition politicians, including PRI leader Alejandro Moreno, PAN figure Jorge Romero, chamber deputy Kenia López Rabadán, former Coahuila governor Rubén Moreira and senators Ricardo Anaya, Lilly Téllez and Luis Armando Melgar, among others. Rubin used the occasion to propose a "Tratado de Lucha Contra el Crimen" (Treaty on the Fight Against Crime), suggesting a new level of cooperation modelled on the existing US‑Mexico free‑trade agreement.
Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, criticised the gathering, describing it as a PRIAN (PRI‑PAN) conspiracy that links Mexico’s far‑right with that of the United States. She noted that U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson was invited but cancelled his attendance, and she reaffirmed Mexico’s principle of non‑intervention while demanding respect for national sovereignty. Sheinbaum said, "no intervención" and warned that attempts to involve the United States in Mexico’s internal affairs would be met with firm opposition.
