Ricardo Sheffield and Emmanuel Reyes clash over León mayoralty

Internal tensions within the Morena party have escalated as Senator Ricardo Sheffield Padilla and Deputy Emmanuel Reyes Carmona clash over potential candidacies for the mayoralty of León, Guanajuato, ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sheffield has publicly labeled Reyes an “arribista” (opportunist), questioning his political roots and residency. Sheffield noted that Reyes previously belonged to the PRD and received support from the PAN, and he accused Reyes of frequently changing his registered address to maintain political eligibility. Furthermore, Sheffield suggested that Reyes relies on his connections with party leaders like Marcelo Ebrard and Mario Delgado to sustain his political ambitions.

In a more severe accusation, Sheffield alleged that Reyes’s campaign funding might originate from the La Luz del Mundo church. In response, Reyes Carmona has filed a complaint against Sheffield with Morena’s Commission of Honesty and Justice, accusing the Senator of slander and desperation due to Reyes’s high standing in recent opinion polls.
