Villa Verdi restoration announced following Riccardo Muti protest

Conductor Riccardo Muti has issued a strong protest against the state of neglect at Villa Verdi, the historic residence of composer Giuseppe Verdi in Sant’Agata di Villanova sull’Arda. Muti criticized successive governments for failing to maintain the site, which has been closed to the public since 2022 and shows signs of physical decay, including humidity and overgrowth.

Following Muti’s musical appeal, Italian Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli announced that restoration works are set to begin. The Ministry has allocated approximately 20 million euros for the project, covering the acquisition, expropriation, and the complete regeneration of the building and its gardens. The goal is to transform the villa into an elite house-museum dedicated to Italian opera.

In addition to the restoration efforts, local initiatives such as the ‘Verdi 10/10’ festival continue to celebrate the composer’s legacy through music, workshops, and cultural events in the surrounding region.
