Riccardo Muti receives highest honor from Salzburg

Italian conductor Riccardo Muti has been awarded the Ring of Salzburg, the highest honor bestowed by the state of Salzburg, Austria. The award recognizes his unparalleled commitment to the Salzburg Festival, where he has conducted 270 performances over more than five decades.

Muti, who first performed at the festival in 1971 following an invitation from Herbert von Karajan, was presented with the honor by Governor Karoline Edtstadler. The award serves as a symbol of his long-standing dedication to the musical traditions of the region.

In a recent performance at the festival, Muti conducted Verdi’s Requiem with the Vienna Philharmonic. The performance was noted for its profound depth and transcendence, marking a significant moment in his storied career at the festival.
