Riccione commemorates Gothic Line liberation and carbonara origins

The city of Riccione hosted the ‘Linea Gotica e Carbonara’ event on September 20, a historical reenactment commemorating the liberation of the city and the origins of the carbonara pasta dish.

Organized by Adriatic Veteran Cars with municipal patronage, the event featured a parade of approximately 100 restored, functional vintage military vehicles and over 150 participants dressed in World War II uniforms. The procession moved through the city streets to Piazzale Roma, where the vehicles were displayed for the public. The event specifically honored the breakthrough of the Gothic Line by Anglo-American troops on September 21, 1944.

In addition to the military history, the event highlighted the culinary tradition that chef Renato Gualandi reportedly created at the Grand Hotel Des Bains. According to local tradition, Gualandi used ingredients provided by Allied forces to invent spaghetti alla carbonara for a victory dinner. The commemoration included Scottish bagpipes and period-accurate dance performances.
