Rice cooking water measurement via finger joints lacks precision
The traditional method of measuring water for cooking rice using a finger joint is often unreliable due to variations in volume and physical measurements. While this folk technique can work with a consistent pot and routine, it fails to account for the actual volume of water required.
Differences in pot diameter significantly impact water volume; for a pot with a 21.6cm diameter, a mere 1mm change in water height equates to approximately 36.65ml. Furthermore, human finger lengths vary, with studies showing differences between 2.3cm and 2.9cm among individuals, leading to inconsistent results.
Rice varieties also require different water levels. Manufacturers like Zojirushi recommend using specific markings for different types of rice, such as white, brown, or long-grain, rather than relying on finger measurements.
