Rice producers in Valencia warn of critical campaign

Rice producers in the Valencian region of Spain, particularly in Ribera Baixa, are facing a “critical” upcoming campaign that threatens the future of the crop and the Albufera natural park ecosystem. According to the agricultural organization AVA-ASAJA, the sector is struggling with a combination of falling prices and rising production costs.

Projections suggest rice prices could drop below 0.50 euros per kilogram, a significant decrease from the 0.70 euros recorded four years ago and a level that already implies working at a loss. These low revenues are compounded by high costs for essential inputs, including fuel and fertilizers.

Additionally, farmers are concerned about the resurgence of the “cucat” pest. While previously under control, the pest has caused damage to up to 34% of rice fields in certain areas. Producers fear the situation will worsen due to the diminishing availability of authorized active substances to combat pests, noting that administrations have not yet provided sufficiently effective alternatives.
