Rich Rodriguez considers open student tryouts for WVU football

West Virginia University head football coach Rich Rodriguez has indicated that he may hold open tryouts for students to fill remaining roster spots. Rodriguez noted that the team currently has one or two vacancies and mentioned that if these are not filled through other means, a student body tryout could be organized.

Rodriguez referenced his time at Michigan, where a player named Jordan Kovacs successfully transitioned from a tryout to a starter and eventually played in the NFL. While the coach is looking at veteran players with renewed eligibility, he remains open to unconventional methods to ensure roster depth.

In addition to roster discussions, Rodriguez provided updates on personnel. Jacob Barrick will transition from player to a coaching role to pursue his master’s degree, while cornerback Jason Chambers is working to regain fitness. The coaching staff is also evaluating several transfers and young players within the tight end and defensive units to bolster competitiveness compared to the previous season.
