Richard Branson blames rising airfares on political conflicts

Virgin Group founder Richard Branson has attributed rising airfares to political leaders initiating conflicts, specifically referencing the tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran. Branson stated that the conflict with Iran was “entirely unnecessary” and noted that the previous nuclear agreement was functional.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have disrupted oil production and transport, causing significant spikes in fuel costs. European aviation fuel prices, which previously hovered around $800 per tonne, surged to over $1,800 in April following the outbreak of conflict, before settling near $1,450.

In response to these costs, Virgin Atlantic has implemented fuel surcharges ranging from £50 for economy to £360 for business class. Virgin Atlantic CEO Cornil Koster described these additional charges as “absolutely necessary” due to current fuel price levels. Other airlines, such as Ryanair, have also responded to rising costs by adjusting flight schedules and increasing prices.
